H2 breath test: Reliable diagnosis for lactose intolerance

Do you suffer from unclear, recurring gastrointestinal complaints such as bloating, diarrhea or abdominal pain? Lactose intolerance is a common cause. This can be detected easily, quickly and reliably with an H2 breath test. Other food intolerances such as fructose malabsorption or bacterial colonization of the small intestine (SIBO) can also be diagnosed using a breath test.

What is lactose intolerance?

In Switzerland, around 15 to 20 percent of the population are affected by lactose intolerance. This means that the body cannot digest milk sugar (lactose) properly as the enzyme lactase required for this is either missing or is only produced in small quantities. This can lead to digestive problems such as flatulence, diarrhea or abdominal pain. The H2 breath test is a proven method for making a reliable diagnosis and clarifying the cause of the symptoms.

How does the H2 breath test work?

The H2 breath test is based on a simple principle: when undigested lactose enters the large intestine, it is fermented there by bacteria. This produces gases such as hydrogen (H2), methane and carbon dioxide. The hydrogen is partially exhaled through the lungs and can be measured with a special measuring device. The higher the hydrogen content in the breath, the more pronounced the intolerance.

Procedure and preparation of the H2 breath test

The H2 breath test is a non-invasive test and therefore particularly gentle. Nevertheless, some preparations are necessary to ensure a reliable test result:

  • Fasting: no food should be consumed for at least 12 to 15 hours before the test (still water is permitted).
  • Diet: You will receive special instructions from us so that the test can be carried out reliably. Among other things, it is necessary to avoid high-fiber foods for a certain period of time.

The test begins with a fasting measurement of the hydrogen content in your breath. A lactose solution is then drunk and the measurements are taken at defined intervals over a period of two to three hours.

When is an H2 breath test useful?

An H2 breath test is recommended if the following symptoms occur regularly:

  • Flatulence and bloating
  • Abdominal pain or cramps
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • nausea after eating dairy products or certain foods

If you suffer from these symptoms, an H2 breath test can help to clarify the cause and make targeted dietary adjustments. Make an appointment at our gastroenterology practice in Bern for a comprehensive assessment and individual consultation.
